On a recent trip to New York we visited the Intrepid Museum – well worth a visit if you are into that sort of thing. The museum itself is housed within a retired aircraft carrier; launched in 1943, it saw action in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s and was was decommissioned in 1974.
While on one of the deck I saw this and as you can see, there is is a ladder descending deep into the bowels of the ship. Its not very wide and I think these guys must’ve had to be very small to get up and down these things.
