I took this picture on my trip to Maryland in May. These are just two of the wild ponies that roam the Assateague Island, part of the Assateague National Seashore which spans both Maryland and Virginia. Nature is a wonderful thing. These ponies and their descendants have been here for approximately 400 years. There are two theories as to how they got here. The first is that they swam ashore after a shipwreck, the other and most likely theory is that they are the descendants of livestock abandoned after the European settlers left the island for the mainland. These ponies, once domesticated are now wild and roam freely.
